Forum theatre is an engaging and dynamic experiential learning method that generates meaningful discussion within a group, especially when addressing nuanced topics or challenging conversations.
LEXi forum theatre sessions typically begin with two Actor Facilitators demonstrating a behavioural model or new process that has been previously introduced. Through a semi-scripted scene, the Actor Facilitators present a thought provoking topic in an impactful, entertaining, and memorable way. This scene, often infused with appropriate humour, is designed to encourage comment from the audience. Following the scene, participants are invited to share their perspectives, discuss the issues raised, and reflect on what they have observed.
The scene is then replayed, offering participants the chance to contribute by coaching the Actors Facilitators towards exploring alternative approaches. The stop-start nature of the forum theatre method allows participants to pause the action, discuss as a group and learn from each other’s perspectives. These discussions provide a rich and diverse pool in order to broaden and sharpen the participant’s thinking. This dialectical process continues until a model of best practice, directly related to the original theory, is vividly illustrated.
Forum theatre can be used with large or small groups. It can be employed as an effective tool to spark debate in learning environments, or as an issue-raising device at conferences and events. While forum theatre can be delivered virtually, it is more effective when experienced live.
